As a point of clarification, atheism merely entails a lack of belief in god or gods. It is entirely possible to be an atheist and believe in fairies.

William Davis from Durham in England, in Jakarta Post (Indonesian daily newspaper), January 24, 2008.

But then we may logically ask: where are the scientific proofs for atheism? The answer is simple: scientific atheism has absolutely no scientific proofs! It only has its convenient initial assumptions, which hundreds of millions of people have been compelled to believe blindly, even though it is logically impossible to believe in them. In fact, aheism’s fairy tales about spontaneous creation, spontaneous motion, and spontaneous evolution of matter are much more unscientific and implausible than any run-of-the-mill fairy tale. […]  Even the movement of a hammer in a fairy tale is willed by a sorcerer. But no decent fairy tale would would even try to tell you that an inanimate hammer created itself…

Joseph Davydov, a former Soviet physicist, PhD from the Moscow Institute of Energy (1967), in his book God Exists, 2000, page 119.

There are some atheists who believe in ‘intelligent design,’ but not by a Creator. They believe an alien life force is a possible option for explaining creation, and they are serious. Many may be surprised to know that Francis Crick, Nobel Prize winner and one of the discoverers of the structure of DNA, the genetic blueprint for life, believes that life forms were sent to earth in a space ship by a dying civilization.

Sharon Hughes in Christian News Today, January 24, 2008.
