Tens of thousands of anti-abortion protesters from all over the country came to the March for Life rally in Washington D.C. from the Mall to the U.S. Supreme Court today, January 22. They demanded an immediate end of abortion in the entire United States.
The protesters braved a gray, wintry day and chilly drizzle to mark the 35th anniversary of February 22, 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court decided the case Roe v. Wade and opened the way for a federal legalization of abortion. As a result of that decisions, tens of millions of preborn human beings have been killed in their mothers’ wombs in America so far, a tragedy of massive proportions.
A March for Life is held in Washington D.C. on this day every year. This time it was heart-warming to see how many teenagers and young adults participated in the rally, carrying signs demanding a ban on abortion.
Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians and nondenominational Christians from Christian schools and churches from all over the country marched shoulder to shoulder to demand a complete end to abortion and a respect for the God-given life of every preborn human.
In a message at the beginning of the march, President George W. Bush said in his pre-recorded message, “Today we’re heartened — heartened by the news that the number of abortions is declining. But the most recent data report that more than one in five pregnancies end in an abortion,” He said that “America is better than this, so we will continue to work for a culture of life.”
He gave the rally his support: “You’re here because you know that all life deserves to be protected. And as you begin your march, I’m proud to be standing with you.” President Bush also hosted 200 marchers from the rally to the East Room of the White House for coffee and doughnuts.

Pro-life rallies demanding end to abortion were also held in state capitals and other cities today and yesterday. Pro-abortion advocates staged counter protests in some places.
Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, said that the pro-life movement is alive and well. “Support for abortion, and abortions themselves, are at their lowest levels in over 30 years. This past Sunday thousands of churches preached messages on ‘The Sanctity of Life,’ and tens of thousands participated in statewide pro-life rallies and marches.”
“Abortion-on-demand has been imposed on our nation because the courts and others have accepted — and even advanced — at least two pervasive myths: that abortion is ‘good’ for women and that the interests of women and their unborn children are necessarily in opposition,” said Peter Burke, Americans United for Life (AUL) Vice President and Legal Director. “To restore a culture that respects and values human life, we first have to counter these myths with facts.”
In the 35 years that abortion has been legal in the United States, much information has accumulated demonstrating that abortion hurts women in devastating ways,” states AUL Staff Counsel Mailee Smith.
According to Mailee Smith, the five most well-documented medical risks from abortion are: (1) a heightened risk of pre-term birth in future pregnancy, (2) an increased incidence of alcohol and drug abuse, (3) an increased risk of suicide, (4) a heightened risk of placenta previa in future pregnancies, and (5) the loss of protective effect against breast cancer from a first full-term pregnancy.
