1956: Five U.S. missionaries were massacred by the Auca tribe in Ecuador. – They were evangelizing the fierce Auca tribe in the Amazon jungle (the “Operation Auca”).
1939: Death of the German Bible translator Hermann Menge, author of the “Menge Bible” (Menge-Bibel).
1902 Birth of the Spanish Catholic priest Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer (died 1975), founder of the Catholic organization Opus Dei. – He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
1860: Wheaton College in Chicago was chartered. – Until then it had existed as the Illinois Institute.
1569: Philip II, the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, was murdered. - He was a victim of Ivan IV, the first czar of Russia (known as “Ivan the Terrible”).
