Martin Luther King Jr. speaking in 19631929: Birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a black Baptist pastor, a leader and hero of the U.S. movement for black civil rights, and an advocate of nonviolent resistance. – Dr. King became a pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1953, at the age of 24. In 1955, Dr. King and another black pastor in Montgomery, Ralph David Abernathy, founded Southern Christian Leadership Conference. I would agree with St. Augustine that “an unjust law is no law at all.” Now, what is the difference between the two? How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. To put it in the terms of St. Thomas Aquinas: An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law.

From “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

1909: Death of St. Arnold Janssen, the German founder of the Catholic missionary organizations Society of the Divine Word, the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters, and the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters. – Janssen’s missionary organizations have been blessed by God: According to a Vatican source, there are over 6,000 missionaries of the Divine Word in 63 countries, over 3,800 missionary Servants of the Holy Spirit, and over 400 Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration. Janssen was canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

1844: The Catholic University of Notre Dame near South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A., received its charter. – It was founded in 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C.
