1789: Birth of August Neander, a prominent German Protestant theologian and church historian. – He was the author of important works, including the monumental 6-volume General History of the Christian Religion and Church, The Life of Jesus Christ in its Historical Connexion and Historical Development, Christ’s Kingdom, the Kingdom of True Freedom and Equality, Lectures On the History of Christian Dogmas,, and studies of ancient Gnosticism. He died in 1850.
1773: First public performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s composition Exultate, jubilate, an instrumental and vocal work of sacred music. – The original Latin lyrics are dedicated to Virgin Mary. The beginning of the lyrics in original Latin and in Gloriscope’s translation:
Exultate, jubilate,
o vos animae beatae,
dulcia cantica canendo,
cantui vostro respondendo,
psallant aethera cum me.
O exult, rejoice,
you happy souls,
singing sweet songs,
to your songs responding
will the heaven sing psalms with me.
1562: The edict of Saint-German introduced freedom of religion for Huguenots (French Calvinist Protestants) in France.
1377: Pope Gregory XI moved the seat of papacy from Avignon, France, back to Rome.
