New Baptist Covenant:
A turning point in Baptist unity?

14,500 Baptists from 30 U.S. Baptist denominations met at an unprecedented gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, from January 30 to February 1.

Gloriscope has written a five-part news roundup about this extraordinary meeting.

1. Why it was a historical event
Never before in U.S. history did so many Baptists from so many Baptist denominations and so many different church cultures, ethnic backgrounds, theologies and places meet together.

2. Its promise and purpose
The organizers promised the participants a huge meeting, wide diversity of participants and topics, and a humanitarian focus. The spiritual purpose was “Unity in Christ,” which was interpreted in different ways by different key speakers.

3. Its topics and activities
The gathering dealt with a wide range of themes and topics. We tell you what was discussed and what was not on the agenda.

4. What did it achieve?
The gathering had at least three major achievements and was declared a success. But it failed to achieve some important things and nobody really knows what is the deeper significance of this extraordinary event.

5. What is next?
The leadership of this gathering will meet again in March to decide what to do with hundreds of suggestions for future cooperation among Baptists. But the long-term follow-up of this gathering is uncertain.
