Abortion | Pro-life activism
“40 Days for Life” campaign starts

(Gloriscope.com) A 40-day nationwide campaign to end abortion in the United States, called “40 Days for Life,” starts tomorrow on Ash Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Almost 60 cities in the country, listed on the campaign website www.40daysforlife.com, will see pro-life activists pray, fast, do community outreach and hold vigils at abortion clinics. The “40 Days for Life” campaign in the fall of 2007, had a “marked impact on Planned Parenthood,” said David Berett, national campaign director for “40 Days for Life.” He said that pro-life people have been so excited by this new approach to pro-life activism that they wanted to start local 40-day campaign in their own communities.

Catholics | Charitable collection
Catholic campaign to help European churches

(Gloriscope.com) The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared February 6, 2008, the day of money collection to benefit the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Donations will be used to renovate and/or expand Catholic churches, seminaries, schools, youth and social ministries, pastoral centers, and other facilities. Some of the money will go for spreading the Gospel through the mass media. Russia is included in the money drive, which means that some of the money may be used in Siberia and other far-away parts of Asian Russia, where Catholics and other Christians were suffering terribly during the Soviet Communist regime.

Mormons | Christian public opinion
Mormons are not Christians, say 57 percent of evangelicals

(Gloriscope.com) The new national opinion survey by the Barna Group, a California-based company studying Christian public opinion, shows that 57 percent of evangelical Christians do not see Mormons as Christians. The study reveals that 27 percent of the U.S. population does not see Mormons as Christians, but the percentage is higher among all born-again Christians (37%(), people under the age of 40 (36%) and political conservatives (32%).

Barna says that the controversy whether Mormons are Christians or not would not be a central factor in most people’s minds when they go decide for whom to vote, but if Mitt Romney becomes the Republican nominee, his Mormon faith may be a “sufficiently significant factor in the minds of millions of voters.”

U.S. elections | Evangelicals
Dobson says Sen. McCain is no conservative

(Gloriscope.com) In a statement released to “The Laura Ingraham Show” today, the prominent evangelical Christian and founder of Focus on the Family, Dr. James Dobson, sharply criticized Senator John McCain. Dr. Dobson, who released his statement as a private citizen, not as a representative for Focus on the Family, said that he was convinced that Sen. McCain is not a conservative. “I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience,” said Dr. Dobson.

Dr. Dobson published a list of objections against Sen. McCain’s political positions: “I am deeply disappointed the Republican Party seems poised to select a nominee who did not support a Constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage, voted for embryonic stem-cell research to kill nascent human beings, opposed tax cuts that ended the marriage penalty, has little regard for freedom of speech, organized the Gang of 14 to preserve filibusters in judicial hearings, and has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language.” Dr. Dobson also said in his statement that, in the past, Sen. McCain approached John Kerry about being Kerry’s running mate in the 2004 national presidential election.
