Guidelines for book reviews

Gloriscope welcomes reviews of new books. Here are our guidelines and our answers to your probable questions.

Which books does Gloriscope review?

Gloriscope is interested in new books published anywhere in the world in the past six months. We give precedence to books published in English, but we review books published in other languages as well.

The books reviewed should be written by Christians and/or on topics of interest to many Christians. We are interested in books of nonfiction (on all topics, including biography), Christian fiction and Christian poetry.

If you are in doubt whether we would be interested in your review of a specific book, please ask us by e-mail first. (See below for contact information.)

In which language?

Your review should be written in English. If English is not your primary language, you can add a version of the same review in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German or Swedish and we may choose to publish the non-English version as well.

A review should be original and unpublished

If you are the author of an original book review that has been published in print or on the Web before, you may need to rewrite it in order to create a new, unpublished review for our consideration. Exceptionally, we may republish book reviews that have been published before.

Will my review be published under my name?

Yes, your review will be published under your byline, like this:
By [Your Name here] for Gloriscope

May I send in an unsolicited review?

Yes, you are welcome to do so. You need not write us first to inquire whether we may be interested in your review of a particular book. On the other hand, we may not publish your unsolicited review, in which case we may e-mail you back and tell you why not. Or we may ask you whether you are willing to revise your review to make it fit into our book review policy. If you are in doubt whether we may be interested in your book review, please e-mail us an inquiry first.

Will I get paid for my review?

We are not able to pay fees for book reviews yet. But we would be glad to give you publicity by linking the name in your byline to your blog, personal or family website (including MySpace, Facebook and other social networking services), or the website of your church.

At the bottom of your review, we will gladly publish the name and country of your city, a sentence or two about your personal background, if you will, and (optionally) the name of your church. You can also e-mail us a small photo of yourself.

How should I write my review?

You can write it in any way you wish, as long as you make it relevant to (or focused on) God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Gospel, the Church, and/or the Bible. The review should also contain at least one Bible quotation or Bible passage reference, either in the beginning or the end of the review, or integrated into the body of the review.

We are interested in two types of book reviews.

A short review should be 400 to 1,000 words long (excluding the book’s bibliographic information and your personal background info). In practice, such a short review is often a book presentation (a summary of the book’s content and a few words about the book’s author), maybe with a concise criticism of some major strong or weak aspect of the book. Better still, you can write a concise critical review, but keep it under 1,000 words. In either case, your short review should be well-focused, tightly written, but interesting and well-flowing. It should also be a useful guide to the reader in deciding whether to read or buy the book – or not.

A long review (1,000 to 3,000 words) should be a critical analysis of the book, with a clear presentation and discussion of the book’s strong and weak aspects. You should also place the book in its wider context and make your review relevant to many Christians. This requires that you are very familiar with the topic or type of book you are reviewing. Because long reviews take much work to prepare and write, you should e-mail us an inquiry first, so that you can be sure we are actually interested in the proposed review.

How should I identify the book?

You should provide the following information about the book:

  • The full title (if the title is not in English, provide the original title and your draft translation in English),

  • The name of the author or authors (if the book is a collective work, provide the name of the editor shown on the cover or inner front page of the book),

  • The name of the publisher,

  • The place (city) and year of publication,

  • The edition, if applicable (for example, second edition or revised edition).

Copyright

You, the author, own the full copyright to your book review and any of your original photos you may send us. If you send us your text and photos, your copyright will NOT get transferred to us. You remain the owner of the copyright. What happens, when you send us your original text and photos, is that you automatically grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide license for electronic rights (not printing rights) to use your submitted text and photos in Gloriscope and any other existing or future publications of 4T4C News Corp. (our company which publishes Gloriscope). You can find further details about copyright in our Terms of Service for Gloriscope.com.
